American music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has been dragged into the ongoing murder trial over the 1996 killing of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur after prosecutors named him during court proceedings in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Combs was mentioned by state prosecutors while presenting their case against Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the former gang leader accused of orchestrating the drive-by shooting that claimed Shakur’s life.
Opening statements began after Davis, 63, was formally charged with one count of murder with the use of a deadly weapon in furtherance of gang activity.
Prosecutors allege that Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, organised the revenge attack and supplied the firearm used in the shooting, although he is not accused of being the person who pulled the trigger.
Shakur was shot while travelling in a vehicle driven by former Death Row Records boss Marion “Suge” Knight after they attended a boxing match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in September 1996.
The rapper, who was 25 at the time, died from his injuries six days after the shooting.
Davis, who has pleaded not guilty, remains the only person to have been criminally charged in connection with Shakur’s death nearly three decades after the murder.
If convicted, he faces a possible sentence of life imprisonment.
